Business skills needs analysis taking Monash to another level

In 2014, Monash contributed 4.1% to Victoria’s employment and there’s no sign of growth slowing down anytime soon.

Keen to understand local businesses skills needs, the City of Monash is working alongside Workforce BluePrint, engaging enterprises and stakeholders to uncover evidence of capability gaps.

20 000+ businesses – 118 000+ jobs – $13.62 GRP

With Monash expected to grow to 207,727 by 2036 – a 13.46% rise in population from 2015 statistics – the City of Monash has put together the Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan to support the number of people visiting and settling in Monash.

The strategy focuses directly on issues raised by the business community and maximise the key attributes that make Monash both divergent and stronger as an economic force within Melbourne.  These include business support, economic precincts, infrastructure development and sustainability, and attraction and investment strategies.

Projects will include the provision of additional support for small businesses, promotion and investment attraction strategies for the Monash Technology Precinct as well as increased focus on the development of activity centres and sustainable business practices.  Training and events on the ground is also a focal point of the City of Monash including working with home based businesses, women in business, Trader groups, CEO’s and startups.

Partnerships with business programs to support young people

The Council have partnered with Small Business Victoria to facilitate training programs which benefit local businesses.  Skills taught include setting up a business, business planning, marketing basics, transitioning online and business networking.

Monash, in Melbourne’s southeast, is home to a high number of tertiary educated locals – with 66% of the local labour force having qualifications, compared to 59.6% for Victoria.

Monash University is backing their graduates offering employment and career development services to students, graduates, faculties, departments, and employers.  Students and graduates have access to fairs, forums, seminars, information sessions and career development programs run throughout the year, which improve employability and skills as well as provide the opportunity to network and connect with employers.

Career Gateway is another tertiary initiative at Monash University.  Here students get help to find jobs at entry level, from volunteer and private tutoring opportunities to graduate programs from leading employers.

Living, working and thriving in Monash

It’s not hard to see why the local economy – and population – is growing.  Council and local groups provide support to strengthen the local community – making it such a promising place to study, work and set up a business.

Understanding the skills needs of businesses and implementing workforce development strategies will help take Monash’s economic prosperity to a new level.
